Dementia Care
A dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming. But with patience, understanding and gentle support, we help your loved one navigate their changing world in a calm, homely environment where feeling safe and known is simply part of everyday life.
What is Dementia Care?
Dementia care is thoughtful support for people living with dementia and other conditions that affect memory, thinking and daily life. As dementia progresses, everyday tasks can become confusing and unsettling.
At Canwick House, our dementia care focuses on creating a safe, trusting environment that upholds individuality and helps residents feel safe and able to trust. We take time to understand the person behind the diagnosis, their life story, preferences and what brings comfort.
Care is delivered in a calm, gentle environment by an experienced team, and it is always at the heart of everything we do.

Who is it for?
Our dementia care is for people living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia who need support in a safe, understanding environment.
You might be considering dementia care if everyday tasks are becoming difficult, your loved one feels anxious or unsettled at home, or family carers need additional support.
Each person's journey is different. What matters most is taking time to understand your loved one's needs, personality and preferences, and shaping care around them.
If you're unsure whether dementia care is right for your loved one, please call or visit us. We can discuss your situation and determine the best next step.

Our approach to care
Every person's experience of dementia is different. At Canwick House, care is shaped around the individual, their life story, preferences and what brings them comfort.
Our long-standing team take time to get to know each resident. When someone feels unsettled, we respond with patience, familiarity and calm, always looking to understand what lies beneath behaviour.
Life here follows a gentle rhythm. Familiar routines, home-cooked meals, time in the garden and quiet moments of connection help residents feel safe, known and at ease.
We work closely with families too, keeping you involved and informed in the way that suits you best, because dementia care works best when it is shared.
How are you feeling?
It's okay not to have all the answers right now. Taking this step takes courage, and we'll walk through every question, every concern, and every worry with you. You don't have to figure this out alone.
The important questions
Dementia care is for anyone living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia who would benefit from support in a safe, calm environment with experienced staff. It might be right for your loved one if everyday tasks are becoming difficult, if they feel anxious or unsettled at home, or if family carers need additional support to keep them safe and comfortable.
There's no single answer to this question, it depends entirely on the individual and their family's circumstances. Some people come to us in the earlier stages of dementia when they need gentle support with daily routines. Others come when care needs are more complex. You might start thinking about dementia care when daily tasks are becoming unsafe or overwhelming, your loved one feels anxious or confused in their current environment, family carers are finding it difficult to manage especially overnight, or everyone would benefit from the structure and reassurance of a specialist care home. If you're wondering whether now is the right time, we're happy to talk it through with you, without pressure or obligation.
We focus on creating a calm, familiar environment where each resident feels known and understood. Our long-standing team take time to learn about each person's life story, preferences and what brings them comfort. When someone feels unsettled, we respond with patience and familiarity, always looking to understand what might be causing distress. Gentle routines, home-cooked meals, time in our gardens and quiet moments of connection all help residents feel at ease. Because our team have been here for many years, residents benefit from seeing the same familiar faces each day, which brings enormous reassurance.
Funding for dementia care can feel complicated, but we'll help you understand your options in plain, simple language. Many of our residents are self-funding, which means they or their family pay for care directly. Some people may be eligible for local authority support, particularly if they have complex needs. In certain circumstances, NHS Continuing Healthcare funding might be available for people whose primary need is healthcare rather than social care. Above all, finding the right home for your loved one is what will make all the difference. We'll talk you through the costs openly and guide you to the different avenues of financial support that may be available for your particular situation.
